
American Society for Metals was found in 1913, in Detroit, Michigan, as the ‘Steel Treaters Club’ . This club was rechristened as American Society of Metals (ASM) in 1933 to deal with all aspects metals. In 1983, the Society expanded its technical scope, beyond metals, to include other engineered materials like composites, polymers, ceramics, and electronic materials. By 1986, the progress made was substantial towards the stated goal of becoming the world’s society for engineered materials. That has led to change in name to ASM International. The Society's Head Quarters is in Materials Park, Ohio State, USA. (35 miles east of Cleveland)
About ASM Chennai Chapter:ASM International Madras Chapter was inaugurated on 10th June 1985, under the chairmanship of late Mr. T.V.N. Kidao, a renowned metallurgist. The Honourable Minister for Industries, Government of Tamil Nadu Mr. K. Rajaram was the chief guest. Dr. Brian Ives, President, ASM International, U.S.A. (then Known as American Society for Metals) and Dr. Agrawala traveled to Madras - specially for this purpose and handed over the charter to Mr. T.V.N. Kidao during the grand inaugural function held at Hotel ITC Park Sheraton, Chennai. Subsequently the name was changed to ASM International Chennai Chapter.
The office has been functioning from the premises of Madras Metallurgical Services Private Limited, Chennai. The chapter has conducted various seminars workshops and courses for the benefit of industries in India. Now the office is functioning at

ASM headquarters at U.S.A. introduced the system of assessment of the working of chapters. The Chennai chapter took up the challenge and the past chairman Mr. Veluru Parthasarathy activated the chapter by conducting various programs. The Head Quarters recognized and given the five star award in 2001-2002. Perhaps Chennai chapter is the only chapter to receive the Five Star Award outside U.S.A. at that point of time. Then onwards the Chapter continues to get awards.
