History Of ASM:
American Society For Metals was first organized in 1913, in Detroit, Michigan, as the ‘Steel Treaters Club’. This became American Society for Metals in 1933. In 1983, the Society expanded its technical scope, beyond metals alone, to include other engineered materials like composites, plastics, ceramics, and electronic materials. By 1986,progress was so substantial towards the stated goal of becoming the world’s society for engineered materials that the name was changed to ASM International. The Society's headquarters is in Materials Park, Ohio. (35 miles east of Cleveland) . About ASM: ASM International Chennai Chapter was inaugurated on 10th June 1985 under the chairmanship of late Sri T.V.N. Kidao a renowned metallurgist. The inauguration meeting was presided by Honourable Minister Sri.K. Rajaram, Minister for Industries, Government of TamilNadu. Mr. Brina Ives, President, ASM International, U.S.A. (then Known as American Society for Metals) came to Madras specially for this purpose, handed over the charter to Sri T.V.K. Kidao during the grand inaugural function held at Hotel ITC Park Sheraton, Chennai. The office has been functioning from the premises of Madras Metallurgical Services Private Limited, Chennai. The chapter had been conducting various seminars workshops and courses for the members. From 1998-99 onwards ASM headquarters at U.S.A. introduced the system of assessment of the working of chapters. The Chennai chapter took up the challenge and our immediate past chairman Mr.Veluru Parthasarathy activated the chapter be conducting various programs which the head quarters recognized resulting in our getting the five star award in 2001-2002. Perhaps Chennai chapter is the only chapter to receive the five star award outside U.S.A. Currently we had started a Consultancy service for solving the problems of the industries and members are given special preference. Further national quiz for the students metallurgical and material science of Engineering colleges also was conducted this year. The members have various Advantages & Benefits of their membership
