About Material Advantage

ASM International Chennai Chapter carries student activities by supporting several chapters of Material Advantage, mainly the Material advantage Chapter of IIT Madras. MATERIAL ADVANTAGE is an amalgam of four professional bodies

  • American Ceramic Society (ACerS)
  • Association for Iron & Steel Technology (AIST)
  • ASM International
  • The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society (TMS)

It provides a single low-cost membership that provides access to the materials science and engineering professional's most prominent societies mentioned above. Material Advantage Chapters give you a much-needed edge in the global job market: the knowledge, experience and networking you need to begin your career successfully.

The MATERIAL ADVANTAGE Student chapter of IIT Madras is very closely associated with the Indian Institute of Metals, Chennai Chapter and Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Student Association, IIT Madras.

Brief History

MA Chapter of IIT Madras started in November 2002 as Students Chapter of ASM International. It is being managed entirely by students with enthusiastic office bearers. It has been very active in arranging lectures by eminent personalities, organizing industrial visits, conducting conferences and motivating the students to take career in the field of materials science and engineering. The chapter has gained the international reputation by organizing the "International Symposium of Research Students - 2004 on Materials Science and Engineering".

Since July 2005, this ASM student's chapter was converted to MATERIALS ADVANTAGE CHAPTER- an amalgam of above mentioned four premium bodies in the field of metallurgy and materials science since July 2005.

Award Received and Recognition
  • Chapter has been awarded for "Most student recruitment" for the years 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 and won $500 in each year.
  • Chapter has been awarded for "Chapter of excellence" for the year 2004-2005 and for 2005-2006 and won $400 each year.

How to apply for Student Membership:-
Qualifications: An individual whose primary occupation is that of student (undergraduate or graduate) who wishes to be a member of ASM. High School students are eligible for membership. However all membership benefits may not apply.

Membership Year: The membership year runs for twelve months following submission of an application and payment of $15 as membership fee. Students will receive a renewal notice and billing prior to the end of the year of membership. The student membership dues are the same price throughout the year. After a student first joins ASM, he/she will receive a membership card and welcome packet in the mail. In subsequent years, the membership card will be attached to the renewal form and will become active upon payment of dues.
